Equus quagga

What makes it special:

The distinctive black and white stripes are what makes the zebra stand out in the wild. Each one has a unique set of stripes. They use their stripes as a means of camouflage, creating a motion daze with disrupted outlines that appears gray, making it extremely difficult for predators to pick out a specific target to attack.

A .375, 7mm, 300WSM, 300WM or a lager caliber is recommended.

Hunting the Zebra - Plains game

Zebras generally run slower than horses, but their incredible stamina enables them to outrun most of their predators. They have an excellent vision and are believed to be among the few animals that can see and distinguish between colors. Its eye sight also enables it to see at night, but unfortunately it’s not as developed as the night vision of most predators. They have the ability to turn their ears around to listen and they have superb hearing abilities.

Hunting method

They are extremely elusive animals and they have been known to test the patience of hunters from time to time. Because of its good sense of hearing and sight, it is hard to approach them without being spotted. They are able to see color and you should wear colors that are less conspicuous and thus blend in with the surroundings.

When sensing danger it runs in a zig zag motion to evade being cached by predators, this makes it extremely difficult to shoot when they are on the run. However as the stallion leads the females away, they tend to stop and look back, this is your chance to take your shot. At a distance of 80 to 100 yards, place the shot in the upper chest area, just on the top of the front legs below the neck. If you are unsure if it’s dead, do not approach and check, rather shoot it again, as they rear up, kick and bite attackers during confrontation.

Two years after birth, the stallions leave the family to form male groupings. They do this until they are strong enough to challenge and fight a breeding stallion for his mating rights. However the fights are really bloody and can cause serious injuries.
