Polar Bear Hunting - Arctic Game

The polar bear shows one of the biggest sexual dimorphism in bears, with males being almost twice the size of the females.

Hunting method

While hunting the polar bear it’s good to note that the bear has a developed sense of smell, thus wearing scented clothing and colognes is a bad idea. As it swims faster than it can walk, hunting on land is recommended. As they are normally aggressive when confronted, the use of hunting dogs as a distraction is recommended. Without the use of dogs, hunters can simply give chase from a distance and take the shot from longer range.

Appearance

The polar bear has an overall white appearance. It has a short tail with a long nose. It has powerful legs that are stocky, however its feet are large to aid it in distributing weight when walking and swimming. As compared to the rest of its body the ears are relatively smaller. Its paws are padded. The polar bear has short sharp claws that are used in digging, hunting and offers a firm grip when walking on ice. The overall white fur yellows with the age.

Habitat

The Arctic Circle area living in snowy and icy cold areas

Diet

Being mostly carnivorous the polar bear diet consists of primarily seals. Other foods ingested include bird’s chicks, eggs, fish, reindeer, rodents, crabs, berries and roots.

Predators
Wolves, other polar bears and man

Life cycle

The gestation period of a polar bear is eight months, after which they are weaned for two years. The females reach sexual maturity at four years of age, while the male at six years of age, though it usually mates at the age of ten due to existing dominant hierarchy. Lifespan in wild is up to 25 years while in captivity it can last up to 30 years.

Behavior

The polar bear is one of the friendliest bears, forming social gatherings from time to time to play fight. Unlike other bears, the polar bear stays active all year around with the exception of a pregnant polar bear that goes into a hibernating condition during the winter. To keep itself warm, it digs maternity dens on land. The polar bears wash themselves after feeding. Though usually aggressive when confronted, the polar bear avoids fights and chooses to escape rather than fight. This is however not the case during mating season as the males fight to create mating dominant rights, thus leading to scarring and blood being drawn.
