Goose hunting – Waterfowl hunts

Geese are nomadic animals and they are always on the move, you should therefore identify areas where the geese frequently feed before going on Goose hunting. There is a clear difference in the two sexes, with the male being considerably larger than the female. The geese molt for almost 45 days a year to replace worn out and frayed feathers with new ones. During this time the geese cannot migrate to other places as their energy is directed towards the growth process, afterwards they will move on.

Hunting method

When hunting geese, a hunter can employ a wide range of tactics to achieve a successful hunt. You should start by scouting an area beforehand to find a spot where the geese frequently show up to feed. As they are selective in their feeding areas, knowing the whereabouts and terrain beforehand goes a long way. You can then either use a hunting blind or camouflage, if you use camouflage, you should try not to spook the geese and minimize your movement.

Behavior

Geese are known to live in pairs and are mostly monogamous throughout life. If one happens to lose its partner, it will look for a replacement during the next season. Geese only nests near water-sources, though social and peaceful birds, the goose is known to be very territorial during the nesting season. The eggs are primarily incubated by the mother who only leaves the nest for short periods of time each day to feed. When sensing danger the gander uses visual displays to signify and alert other geese in the gaggle of impending danger. They communicate by using various calls such as honking when greeting other geese and various high pitched sounds if it senses danger. During high temperatures, the geese spread their wings and spend most of their time in the water. During low temperatures, they will lie flat on the ground to conserve as much heat as possible.
